CHRONORAMA. Photographic treasures of the 20th century

Add to bookmark Add to favourities

The exhibition presented at Palazzo Grassi, until 07.01.24, brings together a selection of 407 works created between 1910 and 1979, arranged in a chronological order, showing women, men, historical moments, daily life, dreams and dramas of the 20th century.

Matthieu Humery, curator of the exhibition, consultant for photography at the Pinault Collection, introduces the exhibition as follows: 'In an era in which millions of images are created every minute, then shared instantly, “CHRONORAMA” plays a role of transmission to current and future generations of great importance. The exhibition presented by the Pinault Collection focuses on the prolificacy of photographic culture of the last century, before the advent of digital technology.” “Awakening from a bizarre dream with the sensation of having crossed time, in the space of a night or a single instant, after having seen and experienced an epic adventure, spanning different eras, we find ourselves face to face with this immense flow of images, a kaleidoscopic vision of a journey into times long gone. This is the feeling that “CHRONORAMA” conveys.

It is the first world exhibition dedicated to the photographic treasures recently acquired by the Pinault Collection and coming from the Condé Nast archives, some never seen before. “CHRONORAMA” represents the time that escapes and the visual trace it leaves through the images created by over 150 international artists. Among the greatest talents of their generation, these artists defined the photographic and artistic aesthetics of the time through the publication of their work in the magazines published by Condé Nast (Vogue, Vanity Fair, House & Garden, Glamour, GQ...) . The portraits of entertainment icons and the great personalities of the century are mixed with fashion photographs, photojournalism, architectural shots, still lifes and documentary photography essays. These coated paper treasures allow us to observe changes in taste in clothing, architecture or furniture or real artistic revolutions.

The images produced are treated as works of art in their own right
