In the room of Eleonora Duse. From portrait to the icon: the charm of an actress through photography

Eleonora Duse was born in Vigevano in 1858 and, daughter of art, finds herself in the scene from an early age: the first four years when, in 1862 she took on the role of Cosetta of Chioggia on a theatrical reduction of Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. In the ' 70 she played the first starring roles as protagonist and in 1879 the first great success in interpreting Giacinta Pezzana in Zola's Thérèse Raquin, who consecrated her as the greatest actress of the time. Among the major achievements included the Princess of Baghdad, Claudio's wife, the Lady of the camellias and Verga Cavalleria Rusticana of 1884.

In 1882 she met Gabriele D'annunzio for the first time and the result was, a few years later, a sentimental and artistic relationship extremely turbulent and tormented. Duse contributed significantly to the fame of D'Annunzio, both from the artistic point of view that purely economic, financing and advertising in Italy and abroad D'Annunzio productions. In 1909, after the final break with the writer, she retired herself for ten years from the scene and drew in an unhappy cinematographic experience – ash (1916) – after whichs he returned to the theatre until her death in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1924.

In the Eleonora Duse's room is preserved and exhibited since 2011, her whole world. original materials are visible during temporary exhibitions that explore various aspects of the life of the actress. A selection of portraits and pictures in costumes will lead you to discover this extraordinary actress, between the images that helped build the reputation of this artist and to spread the memory up to the present day.

Among the works on display as well as a large number of portraits of young people, even photographs of the Florentine Mario Nunes Vais, Spaniard Pau Audouard and some of the most significant authors of American photography, including Aimé Dupont, Joseph Byron, Arnold Genthe and Edward Steichen.
